How It Started

Like all great beginnings, ours started with a little spark of inspiration. This spark arrived in the shape of a Rufous hummingbird, a tiny creature fearless against the Pacific Northwest rain, hovering with determination and grace. Watching the hummingbird in motion, our founder, Jim MacLean, saw a reflection of what home and design could be: resilient, joyful, and full of possibility.

Inspired by the Rufous hummingbird—celebrated for its hardy spirit and a touch of good fortune​—we knew we had found the perfect name for our new venture. Much like that hummingbird, we wanted to bring energy and transformation into people’s lives. With a heart full of inspiration (and years of design expertise under our wing), we set out to transform ordinary rooms into personal sanctuaries. 

By honoring the spirited hummingbird in our name, we carry its sense of warmth, agility, and transformation into everything we do. That’s how Rufous & Co took flight.

How It’s Going

Today, Rufous & Co is humming with creativity and purpose, on a mission to make interior design accessible and stress-free for everyone. That means we believe beautiful, functional spaces belong in every home, and bringing them to life should feel easy and within reach—never overwhelming. From our shop in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, we bring this belief to life through a curated collection of home décor and a range of personalized design services, all aimed at taking the guesswork and anxiety out of decorating.

Yet there’s more to Rufous & Co than simply transforming interiors—we believe in caring for the community that brings them to life. For every purchase, we donate a portion of our proceeds to support local families and youth at risk of homelessness—because everyone deserves the comfort and security of a beautiful home. 

Seeing our clients smile in their new spaces and knowing we’re helping our community at the same time—that’s how we measure success. It’s design with heart, all the way through.
